In 2021, a random citizen dumped a 15-year-old Australian Shepherd by the side of a busy interstate. The senior dog was quite overweight and infested with maggots. The poor dog didn’t understand why she was alone, but she showed such a strong will to survive.
New hope
Belky the dog was discovered by a bystander roaming along the side of a Michigan interstate. They contacted the Saginaw Police Department, who picked up and transported Belky to Saginaw County Animal Care & Control (SCACC). The dog looked terrible so she got examined for her healthcare needs.
After addressing the maggot issue and placing her on a diet, the SCACC transferred Belky to a rescue group called the Humane Society of Midland County. They looked after her until they found her a forever family.
Belky lost a few pounds in preparation for her adoption. The BISSELL Pet Foundation organized a special “Empty the Shelters” adoption program, which drew the elderly dog and her adopter together.
Forever loved
Breanna Dalton fell in love with Belky after seeing her on Facebook. When she met Belky in person, she realized they were a fantastic match. Dalton took in the senior dog and provided her the retirement home she deserved. Dalton was well aware that it was far more difficult for older dogs to get adopted since everyone preferred puppies who’d be with them for a longer time.
Belky immediately adapted to her new lifestyle. She enjoyed taking walks, cuddling with her unicorn stuffed animal, and napping on an orthopedic dog bed. Belky greeted Dalton with enthusiasm and full-body wiggles every time she returned home.
Senior dogs were often neglected in shelters and rescues, regardless of the fact that they can be the most loving canines on the planet. Dalton hoped that Belky’s story would inspire many pet owners to adopt their own senior dog.
