Several hikers of a mountain in Wrightwood, California reportedly saw three dogs repeatedly roaming around. Word started getting around, and concerns about the animal’s wellbeing started growing. Local rescuers mounted rescue attempts, but none of them were successful.
The dogs didn’t grow up there as there were no previous sightings. It was more likely that the three dogs were homeless siblings and got stranded in the area while looking for food and shelter. A week after they were first seen, Hope for Paws, a California-based animal rescue group, got a call requesting their help.
Up in the air
Worried that the dog might not survive the cold weather in the mountain, a two-person rescue team immediately set out to save them. From a trail, the two rescuers went down a steep slope, carrying a bag of food with them. One of the dogs, the smallest of the small pack, must have sensed the food and went near the rescuers. Her siblings were too afraid to follow her and kept a good distance away.
Soon enough, they were able to put a gentle snare around her neck. The stray started thrashing around, trying to get loose. This scared the other dogs, who then ran away and hid. Fortunately, they were able to calm down the smaller pup and got her back up safely to the trail.
To catch the other dogs, the rescuers slowly lowered a cage so that they can set a trap. But after waiting for hours, the two dogs refused to go into the cage and just sniffed around it. Unable to wait any longer, the rescuers went back to their facility. They asked volunteers to monitor the trap.
Adopted
Barely after they arrived back at their shelter, they received a call that one of the dogs was caught, and the volunteers set the trap again. Two days later, the other sister was caught as well.
All three were placed in foster homes where they were treated for malnutrition and some superficial cuts and wounds. After they have recovered, it didn’t take long for two of the three dogs to get adopted. One is still waiting for the perfect family for her.
