A Bulldog puppy named Draper Fitzgerald, who was only a few days old, was taken straight to the emergency room because his paw looked as if it had been chewed off. The vet recommended euthanasia. However, a nonprofit organization called Road Dogs and Rescue intervened and saved him. A volunteer for the organization named Melanie agreed to foster him even though she had never fostered a puppy before.
Melanie took him to the clinic daily to have his bandage changed. According to the vet, there was a possibility that his leg would get amputated.
After a few days, Draper opened his eyes and started to show his spunky personality. He surely was very vocal about his likes and dislikes.
Draper took an interest in the house cats. He would seek them out and play with them. The cats had never interacted with puppies before, so they were not sure about him at first. Eventually, they accepted him and played gently with him.
Surprisingly, Draper’s paw healed completely after a few more treatments. He could raise it or walk on it when he needed to. Even though the vet did not need to amputate it, Draper still needed a prosthetic leg.
Before long, Melanie had to let Draper go to his forever home. It was hard to say goodbye because she had grown attached to him. However, she knew that her job was done. Draper was well and strong enough to be with a permanent family.
Draper flew to a family in Pennsylvania who knew how to care for special needs dogs, so Melanie knew that he would be in good hands. When Draper’s new mom, Cheryl, first saw him, her first impression was that he was so tiny but feisty. He had a lot of confidence and did not act as if he was any different. He fit in perfectly with his new family, and they looked forward to seeing him grow.
