Jackie Rakers knew exactly what she was in for when she signed Heaven’s adoption papers at Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter. The poor dog was scared of every single thing. Taking care of her was challenging for Rakers because she wouldn’t dare let anyone come near her.
As difficult as the situation was, the fur mom remained determined to help the pooch come out of her shell. Rakers did her research and looked for ways to solve the problem she and Heaven were facing. After gathering all the data she needed, she finally devised a plan that would make the dog less scared of everything.
Quick trips to the Home Depot
Rakers started by taking the pooch on quick runs to the Home Depot. She wanted to introduce Heaven to new places. They’d stay there for about five minutes and then head home. Rakers would give Heaven a treat after each trip to reward her for being a good sport.
As weeks passed, their five-minute trips got longer. Rakers would use their extra time to introduce Heaven to different sections at the store. The pooch became so comfortable being at Home Depot, that it eventually became her favorite place!
Landing a job
The employees soon decided to give Heaven her very own little apron. The pooch loves wearing it so much; she’d wag her tail nonstop whenever Rakers would bring it out. It’s become a security blanket of some sort for her.
Heaven’s now more confident when it comes to interacting with people. Sometimes she would even insist that her mom introduce her to the store’s customers. She also sometimes leaves Raker and explores the store all by herself!
Her fur mom’s mighty proud of the dog Heaven’s become. She’s more confident and trusting now. She also likes to pay it forward by giving hugs to whoever might need it.
