A few years ago, a devastating wildfire in Chile destroyed over 1 million acres, and many people lost their lives. Due to the widespread damage in the forests, the country struggled to bring them back to life.
Despite the challenging situation in their country, the citizens of Chile remained steadfast and resilient — they’ll do everything they can to restore their beloved forests. PEWOS, an environmental organization in Chile, aims to implement a creative program that involves dogs’ participation in rebuilding seared forests. Headed by siblings Francisca and Constanza Torres, the organization helps the community restore Chile’s forests one step at a time.
Meet Border Collies Das, Olivia, and Summer — herding dogs who are happy to create an impact and help save the environment. They assist in the rehabilitation of Chile’s forests, and they’re doing an excellent job. Border Collies are famous for their intelligence, intense focus, and drive towards their work. Das, Olivia, and Summer work very hard to help the community.
The trio is up to the task, and they take the most demanding responsibility. The canines enjoy going around and spreading seeds across the forests. These dogs love to run and work, and their efforts don’t go unnoticed. Of course, the group receives their favorite reward in exchange for their help — dog treats!
Torres shares that these dogs’ work covers around 18 miles every day, and they can distribute over 20 pounds of seeds. Das, Olivia, and Summer carry a custom-made backpack that contains plant seeds for them to spread out. Other dogs participate in this universal effort to help in the reforestation drive of their country.
In just a matter of time, the initiative to restore Chile’s forests began to pay off. Reports show that grass and vines start to grow in the burned areas. Torres hopes that their collective effort will turn the land into something green very soon.
